LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior distance runner Dillon Maggard has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week, for the period ending Sunday, April 23, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
It is the eighth time this year and ninth time in Maggard’s career that he has been named USU’s student-athlete of the week.
The native of Kirkland, Wash., broke Utah State's 33-year-old 1,500m record, placing fourth with a time of 3:42.15 last weekend at the Stanford-hosted Cardinal Classic. His 1,500m time ranks third in the Mountain West and 18th in the nation this season.
The Mountain West Outdoor Championships will be held in Logan, Utah, on May 10-13, just 12 days before the First Round of the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, on May 25-27.

MEN’S GOLF – Junior Braxton Miller (Boise, Idaho) shot a 1-under 71 during his final round to finish tied for 15th place at 1-under 215 (73-71-71) at the 2017 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship held last weekend in Tucson, Ariz. Utah State finished tied for ninth place in the 11-team field with a 13-over 877 (293-296-288).
SOFTBALL – Senior second baseman Victoria Saucedo (Covina, Calif.), led Utah State to a 3-1 record last week as the Aggies won at Weber State, 5-0, before taking a home series over New Mexico (W 9-7, L 5-9, W 5-2). Against the Wildcats, Saucedo went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring one run and batting in another. She also added two defensive assists. In the series-opener against the Lobos, Saucedo was 2-for-3 at the plate, including one home run. She also added one RBI and two assists. She was 2-for-3 with two doubles in Saturday's loss to the Lobos, while adding three RBIs, one walk and two assists. In the series finale, Saucedo went 1-for-2 at the plate while scoring one run and getting walked once. She also added three putouts in the win. On the week, Saucedo hit a team-high .636 (7-of-11) with two doubles and one home run. She scored three runs in the four games, while batting in another five. Defensively, Saucedo tallied three putouts and six assists.
MEN’S TENNIS – Junior Kai Wehnelt (Berlin, Germany) posted a perfect 2-0 mark in singles and doubles last weekend as Utah State posted a 4-1 Mountain West road win at Boise State to secure its second-consecutive MW Championship. In doubles, Wehnelt paired with sophomore Samuel Serrano at the first position to claim a 6-3 win. Then, playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Wehnelt swept his opponent to be the first off the courts, winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-2).
WOMEN’S TENNIS – Junior Sabrina Demerath (Kenmore, Wash.) posted a 2-0 mark in singles and doubles last weekend as Utah State posted a 5-2 Mountain West home win against Boise State. In doubles, Demerath paired with senior Nini Guensler to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the second position. In singles, Demerath topped her opponent in a dominating third set, winning in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-0) at the No. 5 spot.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Junior Tylee Newman-Skinner (Monteview, Idaho) won the third section of the women's 1,500m with a personal-best time of 4:24.51 last weekend at the Stanford-hosted Cardinal Classic. Her time in the 1,500m last weekend ranks third all-time in school history and seventh in the Mountain West this season.
