Sophomore Nic Bowens Tabbed USU Student-Athlete Of The Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's track and field sophomore sprinter Nic Bowens was tabbed the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 28, in an award voted on by a state-wide media panel.
This is the second career USU Student-Athlete of the Week honor for Bowens, as he also won the award during the indoor track and field season on Feb. 25.
Bowens, a native of Meridian, Idaho (Meridian HS), placed second in the 200m (21.61) and third in the 100m (10.62), while also being a member of the second-place 4x100m relay team (40.22) at the University of California hosted Brutus Hamilton Invitational this past weekend. Bowens joined freshmen Jacob Bautista Jr. and Cole Lambourne, along with senior Will Henry to run the second-fastest time for the 4x100m relay in school history, as the time also ranks second in the WAC this season.
This is the third-straight week that a member of the USU track and field team has won the award, while also being the fifth time this academic year that an Aggie track and field athlete has garnered the accolade.
USU track and field will take this week off from competition to prepare for the 2013 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships that will be hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington at Maverick Stadium on Wednesday through Saturday, May 8-11.

SOFTBALL - Senior pitcher Mandy Harmon (Las Vegas, Nev.) posted a 0.40 ERA last week as Utah State lost to Idaho State (3-2), and was swept in a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at UT Arlington (1-0 (8), 1-0 (8), 1-0). Against the Bengals, Harmon pitched 4.0 innings and allowed one unearned run on no hits with two walks and three strikeouts, while also going 1-for-2 at the plate. In game one against the Mavericks, Harmon pitched 7.0 innings and allowed two hits and one unearned run to go along with two walks and three strikeouts, while also going 1-for-3 at the plate. And in game three against UTA, Harmon pitched 6.1 innings and allowed one earned run on six hits with two walks and one strikeout, while also going 1-for-2 at the plate. For the week, Harmon surrendered only one earned run and struck out seven batters for her 0.40 ERA, while also going 3-for-7 (.429) at the plate.
MEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore Matt Sweet (Salt Lake City, Utah) lost both of his matches at the 2013 WAC Championships as Utah State lost to New Mexico State, 4-0, in the quarterfinals. Against NMSU, Sweet lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-2) and teamed with senior Sven Poslusny for an 8-5 loss at the first doubles position.
WOMEN'S TRACK - Sophomore Chari Hawkins (Rexburg, Idaho) placed second in the 100m hurdles (14.09), tied for second in the high jump with a height of 1.69m (5-06.50) and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.64m (18-06.00) at the University of California hosted Brutus Hamilton Invitational this past weekend. Hawkins also was a member of the fourth-place 4x100m relay team (47.98), joining senior Bri Campbell and freshmen Mikkell Minnoch and Kaityln Wilcox.
