Aggie Pole-Vaulter Sonia Grabowska Named Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Aggie pole-vaulter Sonia Grabowska has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 29, in an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel. It is the first time this year and third time in her career that Grabowska has received USU student-athlete of the week honors. Grabowska, a senior from Warsaw, Poland (VIII Lo Wtadystaw IV) won her fourth-straight pole vault event as she tied her season-best height of 4.12m (13-06.25) at the BYU hosted Robison Invitational last weekend. For the season, Grabowska leads the Western Athletic Conference and ranks 25th in the nation with her season-best mark from last weekend. Utah State's outdoor track and field teams will continue its 2012 season next week as it travels to Moscow, Idaho to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Dan O'Brien Track & Field Complex from Tuesday, May 8 through Friday, May 11. The USU men have won the last three outdoor WAC titles, while the Aggie women placed second at last year's Outdoor WAC Championships. Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included: MEN'S GOLF - Sophomore Tanner Higham (Shelley, Idaho) finished tied for 19th-place with a 4-over par 220 (73-74-73) at the BYU hosted PING Cougar Classic last weekend. Utah State finished in ninth-place in the nine-team field with a 34-over 898 (302-301-295). SOFTBALL - Senior infielder Kelley Kaneshiro (Auburn, Wash.) helped Utah State to a 2-3 record last week as it split a pair of games against Idaho State as it lost in Pocatello (1-0) and won in Logan (2-0). USU then took one of three Western Athletic Conference games over the weekend at New Mexico State as it lost the first game (4-1), won the second game (5-0), and lost the series finale (7-1). Kaneshiro's best game of the week was in USU's 5-0 win at NMSU as she was 1-of-2 at the plate with one run scored and three runs batted in courtesy of a three-run home run. For the week, Kaneshiro posted a .357 (5-14) batting average to go along with a team-high three RBI on five hits. Kaneshiro also had a .653 slugging percentage during the week.
MEN'S TENNIS - Senior Nate Ballam (Logan, Utah) lost in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3) as Utah State lost to top-seeded Hawai'i (4-0) in the opening round of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Tournament. USU ends its season with a 5-14 record including a 0-4 WAC mark.. WOMEN'S TENNIS - Freshman McKenzie Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-3) to third-seeded Idaho (4-0) in the opening round of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Tournament. USU ends its season with a 10-10 record including a 2-2 WAC mark. MEN'S TRACK - Junior Silas Pimentel (Natal, Brazil) won the 200m with a time of 21.46 at the University of California hosted Brutus Hamilton Invitational last weekend.
