The senior from Elchingen, Germany, successfully defended his 2017 discus title last weekend at the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a winning throw of 55.20 meters (181-01). It marked the first time an Aggie has gone back-to-back in the discus since Roger Daley accomplished the feat in 1990 and 1991 (Big West Conference). Furthermore, Hirschmann is USU’s first two-time champion in the discus since James Parker won the title in 1995 and 1999, respectively.
Hirschmann also placed second in the shot put with a career-best heave of 17.81m (58-05.25), which ranks ninth all-time in school history. Hirschmann’s 18 points scored at the meet helped the Aggies capture fourth with 131 points.
Utah State is back in action on Thursday, May 24, when it will send individuals to the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, Calif.
