Utah State Sending 18 Track & Field Student-Athletes to NCAA West Preliminary Championships
Utah State's track and field team qualified 18 student-athletes to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, it was announced Thursday.

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's track and field team qualified 18 student-athletes to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, it was announced Thursday.

The Aggies will send 12 men and six women to compete in Austin, Texas, May 25-27 at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The East Preliminaries are being held at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility in Lexington, Ky.

Athletes who ranked among the top-48 nationally in their respective event earned berths to the NCAA Preliminary Championships. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams also qualified for the East and West prelims.

Athletes with the top-12 times/marks and the 12 best relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Championships will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Finals, which are being held June 7-10 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. There is no decathlon or heptathlon competition at the preliminary rounds. The top 24 decathlon and heptathlon marks in the nation earned an automatic berth to the Outdoor Finals.

The following is a capsule look at the Aggie men qualifiers:

Michael Bluth - The freshman from Riverton, Utah, will compete in both the 400m and the 4x400-meter relay. The Aggies' relay team ranks 17th in the west with an altitude-converted time of 3:05.97, which Utah State set last weekend at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships. In the 400m, Bluth is seeded 41st in the West Prelims with an altitude-converted time of 46.78, which he set at the Outdoor Championships.

AJ Boully - The senior from Boise, Idaho, will compete in the 400m hurdles and anchor the 4x400m relay team, which ranks 17th in the west with an altitude-converted time of 3:05.97, which the Aggies set last weekend at the MW Outdoor Championships. Boully ranks sixth in the west (10th nationally) in the 400m hurdles with a time of 49.58, which he set at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Boully, a two-time All-American, will be making his third trip to the West Prelims.

Spencer Fehlberg - The sophomore from Huntington, Utah, qualified for his first NCAA West Preliminary Championships as he will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase. Fehlberg is seeded 32nd in the West Prelims with a personal-best time of 8:57.34, which he set at the Stanford-hosted Cardinal Classic.

Joshua Gordon - The graduate transfer from Canoga Park, Calif., will compete in both the 200m and 4x400m relay. The relay team ranks 17th in the west with an altitude-converted time of 3:05.97, which the Aggies set at the MW Outdoor Championships. Gordon is seeded 48th in the 200m with an altitude-converted time of 20.98, which he set at the Outdoor Championships. Prior to Utah State, Gordon competed at Cal State Fullerton, where he holds school records in three events.

Sindri Gudmundsson - The redshirt freshman from Kopavogur, Iceland, is one of two Aggie javelin throwers competing at the West Prelims. Gudmundsson ranks fourth in the west (fifth nationally) in the event with a school-record throw of 77.19m (253-03), which he set last weekend at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships. Gudmundsson captured the men's javelin title with that mark, as well as set a facility record and conference record.

David Hirschmann - The junior from Elchingen, Germany, is headed to Austin to compete in the discus. Hirschmann is seeded 44th in the event with a personal-best mark of 53.33m (175-00), which he set last weekend at the MW Outdoor Championships, placing first in the event. Hirschmann competed in the shot put at last year's West Preliminaries.

Clay Lambourne - The junior from Riverton, Utah, is making his third appearance in the West Prelims as he will be competing in the 800m. Lambourne ranks sixth in the west (16th nationally) in the event with a personal-best time of 1:47.31, which he set at the Stanford-hosted Cardinal Classic. The time ranks second all-time in school history.

Dillon Maggard - The junior from Kirkland, Wash., is returning to the West Prelims for the second straight year. Maggard will compete in the 5,000m as he is seeded eighth with a school-record time of 13:41.17, which he set at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays.

Brady Martin - The junior from Smithfield, Utah, is competing in his second NCAA West Preliminary Championships, and will be taking part in two events for the Aggies. Martin qualified in the 400m with a time of 46.52, set at the UCLA-hosted Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. He is seeded 27th in the west in the 400m and will also run a leg on the 4x400m relay team.

Colby Wilson - The senior from Preston, Idaho, is joining Fehlberg in the 3,000m steeplechase at the West Prelims. Wilson is seeded 33rd in the event with a time of 8:57.35, which he set at the Stanford-hosted Cardinal Classic. This is Wilson's third consecutive trip to the West Prelims for the 3,000m steeplechase.

Samuel Wing - The sophomore from Ralls, Texas, will be making his debut at the West Prelims in the 400m hurdles. Wing ranks 27th in the west (44th nationally) with an altitude-converted qualifying time of 51.46, which he set last weekend at the MW Outdoor Championships, placing third in the event.

Devin Wright - For the fourth time in his Utah State career, the senior from Monticello, Utah, will be competing at the West Prelims in the javelin. He is seeded 21st in the event with a personal-best mark of 67.84m (222-07), which he set last weekend at the MW Outdoor Championships, where he captured the bronze medal.

The following is a capsule look at the Aggie women qualifiers:

Kashley Carter - The sophomore from Mona, Utah, will be competing in the 5,000m for the second straight year at the West Prelims. Carter is seeded 36th in the west in the event with a school-record time of 16:14.46, which she set at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Brenn Flint - The sophomore from Syracuse, Utah, will be competing in the shot put for the second straight year at the West Prelims. Flint ranks 22nd in the west (57th nationally) in the event with a mark of 15.61m (51-02.75), which she set at the Utah State-hosted Mark Faldmo Invitational. The mark ranks second all-time in school history.

Olivia Moriconi - The junior from Vancouver, Canada, earned her first berth to the NCAA West Prelims with a personal-best mark of 15.27m (50-01.25) in the shot put, which ranks fifth all-time in school history. She is seeded 36th in the west in the event.

Tylee Newman-Skinner - The junior from Monteview, Idaho, is making her first appearance at the West Prelims as she will be competing in the 1,500m. Newman-Skinner is seeded 24th in the west in the event with an altitude-converted time of 4:21.89, which she set last weekend at the MW Outdoor Championships to capture the bronze medal.

Tori Parkinson - For the third consecutive year, the senior from Wellsville, Utah, will be competing at the West Prelims in the 3,000m steeplechase. Parkinson is seeded 31st in the west in the event with a personal-best time of 10:21.68, which she set at the Stanford-hosted Cardinal Classic. The time ranks third all-time in school history.

Cierra Simmons - The sophomore from Soda Springs, Idaho, is making her debut at the West Prelims in the 3,000m steeplechase. Simmons ranks 17th in the west (34th nationally) in the event with a school-record time of 10:12.52, which she set at the Mt. SAC Relays.

The Aggies recently hosted the MW Outdoor Championships, where the men placed third with 133 points and the women took eighth with 42.50 points.
