Utah State Track and Field Sending Two Athletes To NCAA Finals This Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State track and field will be represented by senior sprinter Will Henry and sophomore high jumper and heptathlete Chari Hawkins at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held from Wednesday through Saturday, June 5-8 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Henry will compete in the semifinals of the 100m on Wednesday, June 5 at approximately 6:45 p.m. (MT). The 100m finals are Friday, June 7 at approximately 6:10 p.m. (MT). Hawkins will begin competition in the heptathlon on Thursday, June 6 at 2 p.m. (MT) and conclude on Friday, June 7. Hawkins will also compete in the high jump finals on Saturday, June 8 at 1:45 p.m. (MT).
Henry enters the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Finals ranked 24th in the 100m, while Hawkins ranks tied for 13th in the high jump and 20th in the heptathlon.
For Utah State, Henry and Hawkins are the first Aggies to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Finals since the 2009-10 academic year when USU had two athletes compete in hurdler Nick Karren and high jumper Clint Silcock.
Henry, a senior from Richmond, Calif. (Sacramento CC) qualified for the NCAA Finals in the 100m after finishing 12th in that event at the first round of the NCAA Championships with a time of 10.60. In the preliminaries of that event, he ran a personal-best time of 10:41, which ranks tied for third all-time in school history.
Hawkins, a sophomore from Rexburg, Idaho (Madison HS) qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Finals in the high jump after finishing tied for third in the event at the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a mark of 1.79m (5-10.50), a height that ranks tied for second all-time in school history. Hawkins set the school record for the women's high jump with a winning mark of 1.81m (5-11.25) during a portion of the heptathlon at the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At the WAC Championships, Hawkins finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,990 points and was selected as an at-large participant to the NCAA Finals. During the 2013 outdoor season, Hawkins set the school record in the heptathlon, scoring 5,441 points at the California Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays Combined Events.
Hawkins school-record height of 1.81m (5-11.25) in the high jump is the top mark heading into the NCAA Finals as 12 student-athletes cleared that height during the first round of the NCAA Championships.
