LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior distance runner Daniel Howell was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Track & Field/Cross Country first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.
This marks the second-straight year that Howell has received CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American honors as he was also named to the third-team in 2011.
Howell, a Manti, Utah native, joins Miles Batty of BYU as the only men from the state of Utah to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American teams as both athletes were named to the first team. Howell is also the only Western Athletic Conference male to receive the honor. Idaho's Hannah Kiser represented the WAC on the women's side on the second team, while Nachelle Mackey of BYU (first team) and Sarah Callister of Weber State (third team) were the only women from the state of Utah to receive the accolades.
Additionally in his career, Howell has also received academic all-district honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in 2010 and 2011, along with being an 11-time academic all-WAC honoree.
Howell has a 3.963 GPA majoring in wildlife sciences and rangeland resources. He is a 14-time first-team all-WAC honoree during his Utah State cross country and track career as he won the 3,000m and 5,000m at the 2012 WAC Indoor Championships, while also capturing the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m titles at the 2012 WAC Outdoor Championships. Howell also placed fourth at the 2011 WAC Cross Country Championships.
At the first round of the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Howell competed in two events placing 21st in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:03.38 as well as finishing 45th in the 5,000m 15:12.85.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-American honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
