Former Aggie Chari Hawkins Finishes 15th in Heptathlon at U.S. Olympic Team Trials

EUGENE, Ore. - Former Utah State track & field standout Chari Hawkins placed 15th in the heptathlon at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field.

The competition was held over two days at historic Hayward Field with the final three events of taking place on Sunday at historic Hayward Field.

The five-time All-American at Utah State finished with 5,720 points. Barbara Nwaba, the leader after the first day of trials, did not relinquish the top spot as she scored 6,494 points to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. Heather Miller-Koch placed second with 6,423 points and Kendell Williams took third with 6,402 points.

Following the first four events of the heptathlon on Saturday, Hawkins was in 12th place with 3,536 points. She placed 13th in the 100m hurdles (13.71), ninth in the high jump (1.75m/5-08.75), 12th in the shot put (12.80m/42-00) and 15th in the 200m (25.01).

On Sunday, Hawkins placed 16th in the long jump (5.83m/19-1.50), 16th in the javelin (37.86m/124-02) and 17th in the 800m (2:24.76).

Hawkins concluded her stellar Aggie career by being selected as the 2015 Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year. The native of Rexburg, Idaho, was tabbed the Women's Outstanding Performer of the Meet at the 2015 MW Outdoor Track & Field Championships in San Diego, Calif., where she won the heptathlon (5,622 points) and high jump (1.76m/5-09.25) titles, while taking second in the long jump (5.92m/19-05.25) and fifth in the 100m hurdles (13.75).

Hawkins competed in the heptathlon at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Finals and earned her third-straight second-team All-America honor with a 14th-place finish in the event. Her point total of 5,750 broke her own school record and was the fourth-highest total in MW history.

Hawkins won Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors three times from the MW, including twice during the indoor season. She was also recognized by the United States Track & Field And Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) as its Mountain Region Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2015.
