LOGAN, Utah - Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) recorded 27 kills and 12 digs to lead Utah State's women's volleyball team to a four-game win (30-22, 22-30, 30-28, 30-26) against Tulsa University on Saturday to win the 2005 Hurricane Invitational hosted by Tulsa.
Utah State improved to 4-0 on the season with the win, while Tulsa dropped to 3-1 with the loss. USU has now won its first four matches to start a season for only the second time in the last 26 years, joining the 2003 squad which won its first five matches.
Beth Hodge (Broken Arrow, Okla.) added 10 kills and 12 digs in the match, while Monarisa Ale (Kahuku, Hawai'i) recorded a team-high 13 digs and eight blocks. Erin Graybill added nine kills and six blocks.
As a team, Utah State hit .271 in the match as compared to a .197 hitting percentage by Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane recorded one more kill (66-65) and seven more service aces (9-2) in the match, but Utah State won the battle at the net notching three more team blocks (14-11).
Cernianska, who hit .276 during the tournament and averaged 5.92 kills and 2.85 digs per game, was one of three Utah State players named to the six-person all-tournament team. The other two Aggies honored were Graybill and Hodge. Graybill hit .324 during the tournament and averaged 2.20 kills and 1.47 blocks per game, while Hodge hit .290 and averaged 4.00 kills and 3.33 digs per game.
Utah State will return to action on Fri., Sept. 2 when it travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the 2005 C&C Services Invitational. USU will open the tournament against the Lady Razorbacks at 6 p.m. (MDT) on Friday, before playing Nicholls State and Kansas State on Saturday.
