Volleyball Begins 2008 Season With Three-Set Loss At No. 20 BYU

PROVO, Utah - Utah State's women's volleyball team opened its 2008 season with a three-set loss (25-16, 25-23, 25-13) to No. 20 Brigham Young here Friday night during the first day of competition at the BYU Molten Classic. USU has now lost three straight matches to the Cougars dating back to the 2004 season.
Senior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh (Sandy, Utah) led Utah State with 11 kills and six digs, while sophomore middle blocker Shantell Durrant (American Fork, Utah) added four kills and three block assists.
Malia Marquardt and Bryn Porter each posted 10 kills to pace BYU, who hit .360 (42-11-86) in the match.
BYU opened the match by hitting a robust .462 (14-2-26) to roll to the nine-point win. USU fought back in the second set as it hit .147 (11-6-34), but was unable to limit the Cougars offense as they hit .278 (16-6-36) to take a two sets to none led. In the third and final set, USU hit a negative .160 (4-8-24) as compared to a .375 (12-3-24) hitting percentage for BYU.
Utah State finished the match with a .033 (25-22-90) hitting percentage and recorded 24 digs and five team blocks. BYU had 39 digs overall and posted 10.5 team blocks.
Utah State will conclude play in the BYU Molten Classic on Saturday, Aug. 30 as it plays Missouri at 10 a.m. and Tulane at 5 p.m.
