LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's volleyball team lost a five-game match (25-30, 25-30, 30-25, 30-26, 12-15) to the University of Utah here Tuesday night to drop to 4-3 on the season. Utah improved to 3-2 on the year with the win. The loss was the third straight of the season for USU, and all three of those losses have been in five games.
Senior Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) recorded a match-high 26 kills, while sophomores Monarisa Ale (Kahuku, Hawai'i) added 12 kills and a match-high nine blocks. Junior Kelsi Peterson also had a solid match for USU as she recorded a career-high 30 digs. Those 30 digs ties Carrie Steverson for the most digs ever for USU in a five-game match as Steverson accomplished the feat against Nevada during the 1989 season.
Senior Shelly Sommerfeldt paced Utah with 19 kills and 19 digs to go along with a .312 hitting percentage.
Utah controlled the first two games as they hit .311 and .262 respectively, while holding Utah State to a .146 and .143 hitting percentage. The Aggies didn't hit much better in game three (.171), but they did limit the Utes to a .100 hitting percentage to notch the win. USU's best offensive game was the fourth as it hit .229 to even the match at two games apiece, but once again the Aggies went cold in the fifth game as the they hit just .125 as compared to a .273 hitting percentage for Utah.
Utah State recorded nine more kills (74-65) and 13 more digs (80-67) in the match, while the Utes had 1.5 more team blocks (13.5-12.0) and one more service ace (4-3). The difference in the match came down to unforced errors as the Aggies had 40 hitting errors and 12 service aces as compared to just 26 hitting errors and 15 service errors for the Utes.
Utah State will return to action on Sat., Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. when it travels to Brigham Young University.
