FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Liz McArthur recorded a match-high 15 kills against Wyoming and a career-high 22 kills against Northern Arizona here Saturday as she helped Utah State claim the 2009 Fiesta Bowl Tournament Championship.
Utah State, who is now 6-3 on the season and winners of four straight matches, defeated both the Cowgirls (25-11, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23) and Lumberjacks (25-18, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19) in four sets on Saturday and began the tournament on Friday with a three-set win (25-12, 25-15, 25-19) against The Citadel.
McArthur, a sophomore outside hitter from St. George, Utah (Snow Canyon HS), hit .270 (15-5-37) against Wyoming and .386 (23-6-44) against Northern Arizona. Junior middle blocker Shantell Durrant (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) also played well for USU with six kills and eight blocks against UW, and 10 kills and seven blocks against NAU. Overall, Durrant hit .462 (6-0-13) against the Cowgirls and .444 (10-2-18) against the Lumberjacks.
In the first match of the day against Wyoming, Utah State hit .223 (44-17-121) as compared to a .183 (53-29-131) hitting percentage for the Cowgirls. USU then hit .290 (61-21-138) against NAU, while the Lumberjacks hit .187 (48-22-139).
Utah State will return to action next weekend when it travels to Kent, Ohio to compete in the Kent State Mizuno Open. USU will play a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 18 against Butler and Kent State, and conclude the tournament Saturday morning against Robert Morris.
