Aggie Spikers Defeat Robert Morris In Three Sets, Finish In Second-Place At Kent State Mizuno Open

KENT, Ohio - Sophomore outside hitter Liz McArthur recorded a match-high 15 kills to lead Utah State to a three-set win (25-19, 25-15, 25-15) against Robert Morris here Saturday morning in the final day of competition at the Kent State Mizuno Open.
Utah State, who finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, improves to 8-4 on the season with the win. Robert Morris falls to 3-11 on the season with the loss.
Utah State had two players named to the all-tournament team in junior middle blocker Katie Astle (Sandy, Utah/Skyline HS) and junior libero Christine Morrill (Neola, Utah/Union HS). Astle hit .419 (15-2-31) during the tournament and averaged 1.36 kills and 1.09 blocks per set, while Morrill averaged 3.67 digs per set. Other members of the all-tournament team included Gina Vera of Butler, and Lauren Jones, Meredith Paskert and Arjola Prenga (MVP) of Kent State.
Against Robert Morris, McArthur (St. George, Utah/Snow Canyon HS) hit .353 (15-3-34) and added five digs and two block assists. Sophomore opposite side hitter Emily Kortsen (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) added five kills, nine digs and three block assists for USU and hit .385 (5-0-13), while Morrill had a match-high 13 digs.
Utah State used an 11-5 run in the first set to break a 14-14 tie en route to its five point win. USU hit .361 (16-3-36) in the first set, while Robert Morris hit .179 (13-6-39). USU used a similar run in the second set as it closed with a 10-2 run to notch the 10-point win. The Aggies hit .296 (10-2-27) in the second set as compared to a .065 (10-8-31) hitting percentage for the Colonials.
In the third and final set, Utah State used a 9-3 run to turn a 16-12 advantage into a 25-15 win. USU hit .321 (13-4-28) in the third set and RMU hit .071 (9-7-28).
Utah State finished the match with a .330 (39-9-91) hitting percentage as compared to a .112 (32-21-98) hitting percentage for Robert Morris. USU also had 8.5 more team blocks (10.5-2.0) and five more service aces (6-1) in the match.
Utah State will begin Western Athletic Conference play this weekend with a pair of road matches at New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech on Thursday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 26, respectively.
