Volleyball Defeats UC Riverside In Three Games

LOGAN, Utah - Erin Cartwright (Hyrum, Utah) hit a match-high .560 on 16 kills to lead Utah State's volleyball team to a three-game win over UC Riverside here tonight by final scores of 30-21, 30-18, 30-19. With the win, USU improves to 8-8 on the season and 2-4 in the Big West Conference, while UC Riverside falls to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in league play.
"Every match is a big match for us and its always nice to get a win," said USU head coach Burt Fuller. "We have been focusing on our serving and passing lately and when we do those things well like we did tonight we give teams a little bit of a tougher look."
Utah State's defense set the tone for the match in game one as USU held UC Riverside to a -.057 hitting percentage, while the Aggies hit .175 to record the nine-point win. In game two, Utah State's offense came to life as the Aggies hit a blistering .395, while limiting the Highlanders to a .050 percentage. USU carried its offensive momentum into game three and hit .370, while UCR hit .214 but only recorded 11 kills.
Individually for Utah State, Cartwright had four blocks, two service aces and two digs to go along with her team-high 16 kills, while Tereza Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) had 10 kills. Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) led USU's defense with a team-high 12 digs.
As a team, Utah State hit .315 in the match and limited UC Riverside to a .058 percentage. The Highlanders did record eight more digs than USU (44-36), but the Aggies notched seven team blocks to just one for UCR.
Utah State will return to action on Sat., Oct. 12 against Cal State Fullerton in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 7 p.m.
