Volleyball Defeats Fresno State In Three Games

LOGAN, Utah - Senior Ingrid Roth (Barrington, Ill.) tied her career-high with 17 kills and senior Erin Graybill (Sandy, Utah) had a career-high 15 kills to lead Utah State's women's volleyball team to a three-game win (30-24, 30-27, 30-21) against Fresno State here Monday night.
With the win, Utah State improves to 14-9 overall and 6-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, while Fresno State falls to 4-15 on the season and 2-7 in league play with the loss.
Neither team led by more than two points until late in game one when Utah State broke open a 21-20 game by scoring nine of the final 13 points to notch the win. USU hit .350 in the opening game and held Fresno State to a .200 hitting percentage. The Aggies were led by Roth and Graybill as they recorded six and seven kills respectively.
Fresno State controlled most of game two and led 20-16 before the Aggies scored five of the next six points to tie the game at 21. After the Bulldogs scored the next two points, USU went on a 7-1 run to take a 28-24 advantage before recording the three-point win. Roth added eight kills in the game for the Aggies, while Graybill connected for four kills as the Aggies hit .212 as a team and held FSU to a .146 hitting percentage.
Utah State broke open a close third game by scoring 10 of the final 11 points to turn a 20-20 game into a 30-21 win. The Aggies hit .457 in the final game as compared to a .231 hitting percentage for FSU.
Along with her 17 kills, Roth added six blocks and hit a team-high .519 in the match, while Graybill hit .440. Redshirt sophomore Beth Hodge (Broken Arrow, Okla.) added 11 kills and 14 digs for USU, while Amanda Orgill (West Valley City, Utah) had eight kills.
Alisha McKee led Fresno State with 14 kills, while Cheryl Selenak had 14 digs.
As a team, Utah State hit .323 in the match and held Fresno State to a .189 hitting percentage. USU also recorded 16 more kills (58-42), 12 more digs (57-45), six more team blocks (7-1), and one less hitting error (18-17) in the match.
Utah State will return to action on Sat., Oct. 29 when it travels to San Jose State.
