Volleyball Loses At No. 14 UC Santa Barbara
Oct. 27, 2000
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Utah State's women's volleyball team, ranked 19th in the country, lost a three-game match to No. 14 UC Santa Barbara tonight by final scores of 15-8, 15-4, 15-9. The Aggies drop to 18-6 overall and 8-3 in the Big West with the loss, while the Gauchos improved to 16-6 overall and 8-2 in league play with the win. The loss snaps a six-game win streak for USU.
"We made way to many mistakes tonight to play with a team like Santa Barbara," commented second-year head coach Tom Peterson. "At times we just played nervous and under fire. For some reason it is hard for us to come to California right now and play well. We are a fragile team if we aren't at home and we need to get over that in the next couple of weeks."
Utah State was never really in the match with UC Santa Barbara as USU hit only .171 as a team, while the Gauchos hit .319. Junior Michelle Matheson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) had a team-high 11 kills in the match to go along with four blocks, while sophomore Rochelle Currier (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) had 10 kills and six digs. The Aggies also got outblocked in the contest 11 to 6.
Utah State will get right back to it tomorrow night as the Aggies play at Cal Poly, a team USU defeated in five games earlier this year in Logan.
