Aggie Spikers Defeat San Jose State In Four Sets

LOGAN, Utah - Senior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 kills and a season-high tying 13 digs to lead Utah State to a four-set win (25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22) against San Jose State here Thursday on Senior Night.
Utah State, who has won four of its last six matches, improves to 8-6 in the Western Athletic Conference and 10-15 on the season with the win, while San Jose States falls to 5-8 in league play and 10-15 on the season with the loss.
Osterloh added four block assists and a career-high five assists in the match for Utah State, while freshman outside hitter Emily Kortsen had 12 kills and a career-high seven block assists. Senior outside hitter Kris Hymas added 12 kills, five digs and three block assists, to go along with a career-high three service aces.
Kelly Crow had 13 kills and 10 digs to pace San Jose State, while Kristal Tsukano had seven kills and 14 digs.
Utah State dominated the opening set as it hit .310 (14-5-29) and held San Jose State to a negative .036 (7-8-28) hitting percentage. Hymas and Kortsen each had four kills for USU in the first set.
Utah State carried its momentum into the second set as it hit .222 (13-5-36) and limited the Spartans to a .000 (10-10-42) hitting percentage. Osterloh had four kills, five digs and three blocks for the Aggies as they scored the final five points to notch the win.
Utah State appeared to have the third set in control, leading 21-20 before San Jose State scored four of the final five points to extend the match. USU hit .308 (15-3-39) in the set as compared to a .211 (15-7-38) hitting percentage for SJSU, but the Aggies committed five service errors.
In the fourth set, Utah State finished with a 5-2 run to notch the win as Kortsen had five kills, including the last kill of the match to give the home team the win. USU hit .282 (14-3-39) in the fourth set, while SJSU hit .146 (15-8-48).
Utah State finished the match by hitting .280 (56-16-143) and San Jose State hit .090 (47-33-156). USU also had 10 more team blocks (14-4), while SJSU had four more digs, (58-54), one more service ace (4-3), and eight fewer service errors (11-3).
Utah State will conclude its regular season next weekend with a pair of road matches at New Mexico State on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., and at Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. (MT).
