Volleyball Loses To Hawai'i In WAC Tournament Championship Match

RENO, Nev. - Utah State's women's volleyball team lost a three-game match to eighth-ranked Hawai'i 30-25, 30-27, 30-25 in the championship match of the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament here Saturday night.
Utah State falls to 21-12 overall with the loss, while Hawai'i improves to 25-6 with the win. USU has now lost 17 straight matches to the Rainbow Wahine.
Zuzana Cernianska led Utah State with 16 kills, while Beth Hodge added 11 kills and hit .500 in the match. Ingrid Roth also had a solid match for USU as she hit .529 with nine kills. Kelsi Peterson led the Aggies on defense with a team-high 15 digs.
Cernianska and Carolyn Forbush, who had six kills in the match, were both named to the all-tournament team for Utah State.
Jamie Houston paced top-seeded Hawai'i with a match-high 17 kills, while Victoria Prince added 11 kills and five blocks.
Overall, Utah State hit .256 in the match as compared to a .273 hitting percentage for Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine recorded just one more kill (52-51), one more team block (9-8), and just one fewer hitting errors (18-17) in the contest, but still won the match in three games.
Utah State will now have to wait and see if it receives an at-large berth into the 2005 NCAA Tournament which begins on Thur., Dec. 1. The NCAA Division I women's volleyball championship 64-team bracket will be announced on ESPNews between 12:30 and 1 p.m. (MT) on Sun., Nov. 27.
