Volleyball Program Inks Junior College Standout
Mar. 21, 2000
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's head women's volleyball coach Tom Peterson announced Tuesday the signing of Hailey MacKay to a national letter of intent to compete for the Aggies Volleyball program beginning in the fall of 2000. MacKay, a 6'2" middle blocker, will enter the USU program as a sophomore after spending just one season at Salt Lake Community College.
As a freshman at SLCC, MacKay played in 117 games for the Bruins who finished with a 45-4 record and lost in five games to Miami Dade in the Junior College National Championship match. During the season, MacKay was fifth on the team with a .319 hitting percentage and fourth with 202 kills. MacKay also had 108 total blocks which was second on the squad.
"Hailey has the potential to be one of the most dominating players at Utah State," commented Peterson. "Physically, she is a very athletic, long-armed player who just needs more playing experience. At times, she dominated play for the second-ranked team in the country last year at the junior college level."
Utah State returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last year's team that went 14-12 overall and won the Eastern Division of the Big West Conference with an 11-5 league mark. Last year's team also set a new school record for most conference wins in a single season.
