Volleyball Player Erin Cartwright Named USU Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Volleyball player Erin Cartwright was named the first Utah State Athlete of the Week for the 2002-03 academic year it was announced on Monday. The weekly award is selected by a local media panel.

Cartwright was an unanimous selection as she was the only Aggie player named to the Southwest Missouri State Fall Invitational all-tournament team. Cartwright, a junior from Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum, Utah, averaged 4.0 kills, 1.9 digs and 1.4 blocks while hitting .210 in the three-game tournament.

The Aggies finished the tournament with a 1-2 record losing 3-1 to both Southwest Missouri State and Arkansas before defeating Southeast Missouri State 3-0. Cartwright's best match in the tournament was against SE Missouri State when she hit .548 and recorded six blocks and five digs.

Last season Cartwright was an honorable mention all-Big West selection and finished second on the team with 361 kills. She is one of three returning starters for this year's team. Utah State will continue its season when it competes in the Texas Longhorn Classic, playing at Texas on Friday and meeting Texas-El Paso and UT-San Antonio on Saturday.

Nominees From Other Sports

Men's Cross Country - Mike Nielson... Finished as runner-up by just one second at the Idaho State Cross Country Opener, USU's first race of the season. Nielson had a time of 18:40 to lead the Aggies to a second-place finish in the five-team race.

Women's Cross Country - Carol Cabinillas... Led USU at the Idaho State Cross Country Opener by placing 10th individually with a time of 11:03. The Aggies finished second in the meet.

Football - Jesse Busta... The linebacker recorded a game-high 12 tackles with a half sack and another tackle for loss in USU's 23-3 loss against Utah. Busta, two stops behind the line of scrimmage led the team.

Soccer - Amber Tracy... Scored the first goal in Utah State's 2-0 win against Weber State on Monday. She did not score in USU's 3-1 loss to Idaho State on Friday.
