Amanda Nielson Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete Of The Week

LOGAN, Utah - Amanda Nielson has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Sept. 9. Throughout the 2007-08 academic year, America First Credit Union will be sponsoring the weekly award, which is voted on by a state media panel.
Nielson, a senior opposite side hitter from West Valley City, Utah (Granger HS), was named to the 2007 Golden Bear Invitational all-tournament team after leading the Aggies to a third-place finish with a 1-2 record during the weekend. Nielson was named to her third all-tournament team in as many weeks after hitting .217 (39-19-92) and averaging 5.88 points, 4.88 kills, 1.38 digs, 0.75 service aces and 0.50 blocks per game. Her best match of the tournament was against Eastern Kentucky as she hit a career-high .609 (15-1-23) to go along with four service aces and two digs.
Nielson was named a 2007 preseason all-Western Athletic Conference selection after earning second-team all-WAC honors during the 2006 campaign.
Utah State volleyball will begin Western Athletic Conference play this weekend as it hosts Boise State (3-0, 0-0) in its home opener on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. USU will then host San Jose State (6-3, 0-0) on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.

MEN'S GOLF - Junior Devin Daniels (Smithfield, Utah) shot a nine-over par 225 as he tied for 51st at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., during the weekend. Daniels, who was USU's top individual finisher, was tied for 30th with a three-over par 147 after shooting a 73 and 74 in the first two rounds, but shot a six-over par 78 during the final 18 holes to finish tied for 51st.
MEN'S TENNIS - Freshman Jakob Asplund (Stockholm, Sweden) posted a 3-1 record in singles action and a 1-1 record in doubles competition at the Boise State Open this past weekend. Asplund advanced to the round of 16 in singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the round of 32 before losing to Piotr Dilaj of Boise State 6-1, 5-7, 12-10 in the round of 16. He then recorded two wins in consolation play with a 6-2, 6-2 win, followed by a forfeit. In doubles action, Asplund teamed with Oscar Ericsson to record an 8-4 win in the round of 16 before losing 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
SOCCER - Senior forward Dana Peart (Brigham City, Utah) had six shots, including three on goal during the weekend as Utah State lost a pair of matches to UC Irvine (2-0) and Northern Arizona (1-0 2ot).
