Aggie Spikers Begin WAC Play At New Mexico State Thursday

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's volleyball team will begin Western Athletic Conference play Thursday at New Mexico State at 7 p.m. (MT).
Utah State is 8-4 on the season after going 2-1 last weekend at the Kent State Mizuno Open with wins against Butler (3-1) and Robert Morris (3-0), and a loss to Kent State (3-2). USU is led by sophomore outside hitter Liz McArthur who is hitting .212 and averaging 3.79 kills, 1.29 digs and 0.60 blocks per set, while sophomore opposite side hitter Emily Kortsen is hitting .259 and averaging 2.14 kills, 2.08 digs and 0.63 blocks per set. Junior middle blocker Shantell Durrant is also playing well for USU as she is hitting .288 and averaging 1.78 kills and 1.27 blocks per set. As a team, Utah State is hitting .237 on the season as compared to a .190 hitting percentage for its opponents.
Utah State's 8-4 record to start the season is its best since the 2003 team began the year with a 9-4 record. USU is 49-72 (.405) on the road over the last 10 years, which includes a 35-49 (.417) record against league opponents. Thus far this year, USU is 2-1 in road matches and 6-3 away from home.
New Mexico State is 5-4 on the season following a four-set win at UTEP in its last match. NMSU is led by sophomore middle hitter Kelsey Brennan who is hitting .342 and averaging 2.39 kills and 1.18 blocks per set. As a team, the Aggies are hitting .193 on the season as compared to a .178 hitting percentage for its opponents. NMSU returns four starters and seven letterwinners from last year's team that went 26-9 overall and tied for first-place in the WAC with a 15-1 league record.
Utah State is 23-35 all-time against New Mexico State, which includes an 8-18 road record. NMSU has won each of the last six matches played in the series including a pair of three set wins last year. The last time USU defeated the NewMags was on Nov. 25, 2005 in five games in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament.
Since the 1990 season, Utah State is 8-11 in conference openers, which includes a 3-6 record on the road. Since joining the WAC, USU is 4-0 in conference openers, defeating New Mexico State (3-0) in 2005, Fresno State (3-1) in 2006, Boise State (3-0) in 2007 and San Jose State (3-2) in 2008. This will be the second straight year that USU begins WAC play on the road.
Following its match at New Mexico State, Utah State will play at Louisiana Tech (9-6, 0-0) on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. (MT).
