Aggie Spikers Begin 2007 WAC Tournament Against San Jose State Thursday Night

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's volleyball team will begin play in the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. when it plays San Jose State at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M. USU is the third-seed in the tournament, while San Jose State is the sixth-seed. Overall, the Aggies have won 15 of their last 21 matches.
Utah State (17-12, 11-5) ended the 2007 season late Sunday night by recording one of the biggest wins in school history as it shocked No. 10 Hawai'i in Honolulu in three games (30-28, 31-29, 30-27). Entering the match, Hawai'i had won 108 straight conference matches at home, was a perfect 97-0 at home in WAC play and had a 169-2 (.988) overall record in the WAC since joining the league for volleyball in 1996. USU entered the night having lost 20 straight matches to the Rainbow Wahine.
The win for the Aggies is its first over a ranked opponent since it defeated then 24th-ranked UC Santa Barbara in five games on Sept. 15, 2005. The last time Utah State defeated a team ranked in the top 10 was on Sept. 12, 2000 when it beat then 10th-ranked BYU in three games in Logan.
Utah State is led by senior opposite side hitter Amanda Nielson who is averaging 6.03 points, 5.15 kills, 2.39 digs, 0.97 blocks and 0.38 service aces per game, while junior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh is averaging 3.81 points, 3.18 kills, 2.93 digs and 0.70 blocks per game. As a team, Utah State is hitting .181 on the season as compared to a .187 hitting percentage for its opponents.
San Jose State is 13-14 on the season and finished in sixth-place in the WAC with a 7-9 league record as it lost its final two matches of the year at Nevada (3-2) and at Hawai'i (3-0). The Spartans, who are 6-0 on neutral courts this year, are led by junior middle blocker Colleen Burke who is hitting .348 and averaging 2.60 kills and 0.68 blocks per game. As a team, SJSU is hitting .199 on the season as compared to a .175 hitting percentage for its opponents.
Utah State swept San Jose State this season, registering a four-game win in Logan and a three-game win in San Jose. All-time, USU is 6-14-1 versus SJSU and this will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams in tournament play.
