Terre Haute, Ind. -

Facing their largest and deepest field so far this season, Utah State’s men and women’s cross country teams performed strongly at the Indiana State-hosted NCAA Pre-National Meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Senior Kyle McKenna led the USU men’s team with a time of 24:29.83 to finish 84th out of 359 runners in the eight-kilometer Men’s Blue Race. Behind McKenna, the Aggie men claimed the 33rd position out of 52 teams.

Senior Alex Litzsinger was the top finisher for the women’s team, taking home a 122nd-place finish out of 340 runners with a time of 21:38.15 in the six-kilometer Women’s Blue Race. Overall, the USU women finished in 43rd-place out of 49 teams.

“This was a great opportunity to gain some experience on the course where the national championship meet is held. This was easily the biggest challenge of the season for our runners and I think that they met that challenge exceptionally,” said veteran coach Gregg Gensel. “I’m really proud of our runners, we had some strong performances from our veteran leaders as well as some of the younger runners who don’t have as much experience with this type of race. We’ll now move on and begin preparing for the Mountain West Championships, which will be another exciting challenge.”

Junior Eric Shellhorn joined McKenna among the top-100 finishers in the Men’s Blue Race, garnering the 95th position with a time of 24:32.68. Freshman Colby Wilson (25:04.56) and sophomore Chris Martinez (25:04.69) finished back-to-back in 177th and 178th, respectively, to round out the top-200 for Utah State. They were joined among the top-300 finishers by sophomore Kade Jensen (25:47.87) and junior Jacob Barton (25:51.65), who finished in 289th and 295th, respectively.

On the women’s side, freshman Tori Parkinson joined Litzsinger in the top-100 with a time of 21:43.47 and a 137th-place finish. Sophomore Jacqueline Winterton (22:13.88) and juniors Ashley Robison (22:19.14) and Brittany Bushman (22:29.46) also performed strongly, placing 230th, 241st and 259th, respectively.

The USU harriers will return to action on Friday, Nov. 1 at the Mountain West Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.
