Utah State Cross Country Ends Season at Mountain Regionals

Utah State’s men and women’s cross country teams’ 2013 seasons came to a conclusion Friday at the 2013 NCAA Mountain Region Championships at Schneiter’s Riverside Golf Course in Riverside, Utah.

The Aggie women and men both finished the competition in 11th-place with 318 and 292 points, respectively. The USU women’s team finished ahead of their 12th-place ranking in the Mountain Region, while the men’s team came in exactly where they were slotted, according to the latest ranking by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The top spot in the women’s six-kilometer race went to Colorado, while Northern Arizona came away victorious in the men’s 10-kilometer race. New Mexico’s Sammy Silva crossed the finish-line first for the women, while Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech cut the tape in the men’s race.

The top finisher for the Aggies in the women’s race was senior Alex Litzsinger, brought her cross country career at Utah State to a close with a 27th-place finish with a time of 21:21.8. Junior Ashley Robison was the next Aggie to cross the finish-line, taking 59th with a time of 21:54.2. Freshman Tori Parkinson (21:58.7) and junior Brittany Bushman (22:10.4) rounded out the top-75 for USU with finishes in 66th and 74th, respectively.

On the men’s side, junior Eric Shellhorn was the top finisher for Utah State in the men’s race, crossing the finish-line in 30:30.9 for a 43rd-place finish. Senior Kyle McKenna (30:56.2) and freshman Colby Wilson (30:56.4) were the next two finishers for USU, taking 56th and 57th-place, respectively. Sophomores Chris Martinez (31:13.9) and Kade Jensen (31:41.8) rounded out the top-75 for the Aggies, finishing 62nd and 74th, respectively.


 

 

Other finishers for Utah State’s women were sophomore Jaqueline Winterton (22:29.0), junior Amanda Stoudt (22:39.2) and sophomore Kelsey Girardelli (23:50.7) who finished 92nd, 101st and 124th, respectively.

For the men, the Aggie effort was rounded out by juniors Jacob Barton (32:00.6) and Thomas Derr (32:16.9), who brought home 85th and 88th-place finishes, respectively.

The top two teams in each race automatically qualified for the 2012 NCAA Championships, along with the top four runners not on a team that is already advancing. All runners finishing in the top 25 of each race will be named to the all-Region team.

The 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Indiana State at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday November 23.
