LOGAN, Utah - Cross country runner David Danley has been named the first Utah State Athlete of the Week for the 2004-05 academic year it was announced on Monday. The weekly award is voted on by a state media panel. Danley, a senior from Roosevelt, Utah, claimed the individual title and led the Aggies to the team championship at the Idaho State Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 4. Danley cruised to a 17-second victory as he covered the six-kilometer course in 18:27. He led a contingent of Aggies who finished in the top four as teammates Clark Bryner and Steve Strickland finished third and fourth respectively. USU won the meet by five points over Idaho State with Westminster a distant third. Last year Danley finished the season strong leading the Aggies in their last two meets. He was ninth overall at the Big West Championships and then placed 10th at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 2003. Utah State will compete at the BYU Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 11. Nominees From Other Sports Included: Women's Cross Country - Ashley Johnson... Won the Idaho State Cross Country Invitational in leading the Aggies to a team victory at the event on Saturday. The sophomore covered the three-kilometer course in 11:00 to edge teammate Stacie Lifferth by two seconds. Football -- Terrance Washington... Was the game's leading tackler in USU's 48-17 loss at Alabama with 13 stops. Also added his first career sack in the game, causing a loss of eight yards. His 13 tackles were the second most in his career behind 14 against New Mexico State last year. It also extended his streak of four straight double-digit tackle games dating back to last season. Soccer - Charlsie Harris... Scored two goals to help lead Utah State's soccer team to an 1-2 record last week. USU opened the week with a 4-0 triumph against instate foe Weber State. The junior scored her first goal of the season in the 53rd minute of that game. She then scored the Aggies' only goal in their 2-1 loss at Gonzaga on Friday. USU then rounded out the week with a 1-0 loss at Eastern Washington on Sunday. Volleyball -- Zuzana Cernianska... Was named to the all-tournament team at the SBC/Sands Regency Tournament hosted by the University of Nevada over the weekend as Utah State lost all three of its matches.
