Utah State’s Alyssa Snyder Named America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week
Utah State women’s cross country runner Alyssa Snyder was named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Sept. 17, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women’s cross country runner Alyssa Snyder was named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Sept. 17, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

It is the second time this year and second time in Snyder’s career that she has been named USU’s student-athlete of the week.

The junior from Coalville, Utah, won her second consecutive race to help No. 30 Utah State upset No. 10 BYU at the BYU-hosted Autumn Classic last Saturday in Provo. Snyder finished the 3-mile run with a time of 16:28.0, completing the race 18 seconds ahead of the Cougars’ Laura Young.

As a team, the Aggies tallied 23 points, nine better than the Cougars’ 32. Utah State also beat Weber State (85 points), Dixie State (120) and Westminster College (153).

Utah State’s men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Lehigh-hosted Paul Short Run on Friday, Sept. 29. The meet, which is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. (MT), will take place at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY – Senior Dillon Maggard (Kirkland, Wash.) placed second at the BYU-hosted Autumn Classic last weekend in the men’s 4-mile run with a time of 19:26.8 to help Utah State to a second-place team finish just behind No. 6 BYU. The Aggies finished ahead of in-state schools Weber State, Dixie State and Westminster.

FOOTBALL – Junior safety Gaje Ferguson (Mendon, Utah) recorded a game- and season-high 10 tackles, which included 0.5 tackles for loss, in Utah State’s 46-10 loss at Wake Forest last weekend. For Ferguson, it is his third-career double-digit tackle outing.

SOCCER – Freshman midfielder Ashley Cardozo (Holladay, Utah) led Utah State to a 2-0 road record last weekend with wins at Eastern Michigan (2-1) and Oakland (3-0). Against the Eagles, Cardozo scored both goals, including her fourth game-winning goal of the season. Her first goal came in the 65th minute on a shot from 20 yards out. Later, in the 82nd minute, she added to the total as she capitalized on a free kick, curving the ball into the top left corner of the net. She took four shots on the day, all of which were on goal. In the win against the Golden Grizzlies, Cardozo assisted on two of the team's three goals. In the match, she took four shots, with three on frame. On the week, Cardozo tallied six individual points with two goals and two assists. She took a team-high 11 shots in the two matches, seven of which were on goal.

MEN’S TENNIS – Senior Jaime Barajas (Woodland Hills, Calif.) posted a 6-2 overall mark in singles and doubles play last week at the Midland (Texas) Invitational. Barajas won the consolation singles bracket with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over junior teammate Samuel Serrano. The win put Barajas No. 1 in all-time singles wins in Utah State history with 68. Barajas also made it to the semifinals in doubles with senior teammate Andrew Nakajima, posting a 2-1 mark.

VOLLEYBALL – Junior libero Tasia Taylor (Taylorsville, Utah) led all players in digs last weekend as Utah State defeated in-state foes Weber State, 3-0, and Southern Utah, 3-1. At Weber State, Taylor led both teams with 14 digs and added two assists. At Southern Utah, Taylor recorded a career-high 28 digs, as part of a season-high 84 digs for the team, and added four assists and one ace. For the week, Taylor totaled 42 digs, averaging 6.00 per set, six assists and one service ace.
