Ben Kessen Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete Of The Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State cross country runner Ben Kessen has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Oct. 5, it was announced on Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

Kessen, a senior from La Crescenta, Calif. (Crescenta Valley HS) finished 40th individually to lead the Utah State men to a 16th-place team finish at the Notre Dame Invitational held in South Bend, Ind., Friday afternoon. Kessen, who ran the 8K course in 24:30, has now been USU's top male finisher in each of its four meets this fall.

Kessen was named WAC male athlete of the week on Sept. 1, but it is the first time this season he has been named USU athlete of the week.

Kessen and the Aggies continue action on Saturday Oct. 18 as they race in the Pre-Nationals held in Terre Haute, Ind.

Nominees from other sports included:
FOOTBALL - Senior linebacker/safety De'von Hall (Reseda, Calif.) had a team-high tying 10 tackles in Utah State's 34-14 loss to No. 8 Brigham Young. Hall also had a pass break-up and returned a blocked field goal 13 yards in the game.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Senior Caroline Berry (Sandy, Utah) was Utah State's top female runner as she came in 108th to help the Aggie women finish 21st at the Notre Dame Invitational last weekend. Berry completed the 5K course in 18:11.

MEN'S GOLF - Senior Toph Peterson (Logan, Utah) finished 23rd individually with a 13-over par 229 to help Utah State's men's golf team finish in ninth-place out of 12 teams at the Oral Roberts Shootout last week. Peterson finished the tournament by shooting an even par 72 during the final 18 holes, which was the best individual round by a USU golfer. He began the tournament with rounds of 76 and 81.

SOCCER - Senior goalkeeper Ali Griffin (South Jordan, Utah) had a season-high seven saves in Utah State's 2-0 loss to BYU on Oct. 2. The seven saves were the fourth-highest in Griffin's four-year career. The senior played all 90 minutes and only allowed one goal in each half as the Cougars out-shot the Aggies, 12-9.

 

 

VOLLEYBALL - Senior outside hitter Kris Hymas (South Jordan, Utah) helped Utah State notch a 1-1 record last week with a three-set win against Louisiana Tech and a three-set loss to New Mexico State. Against the Lady Techsters, Hymas came off the bench to record a match-high 10 kills, to go along with four digs as she hit .304 (10-3-23). Against NMSU, she had five kills, four digs, one block and one service ace. For the week, Hymas hit .159 (15-8-44) and averaged 3.75 kills and 2.00 digs per set.
