Dillon Maggard Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week
Dillon Maggard picked up his second career cross country All-American accolade last week

LOGAN, Utah -

Utah State senior cross country runner Dillon Maggard has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 19, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

Overall, it is the fourth time this year and 13th time in his career Maggard has been named USU's student-athlete of the week.

With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.

Last week, the Kirkland, Wash., native earned his second-career cross country All-American honor as he placed sixth at the NCAA National Championships held in Louisville, Ky., finishing the 10-kilometer course in a personal-best time of 29:16.20. The sixth-place finish is the best-ever for an Aggie at the national championships as Maggard led USU to a 27th-place finish out of 31 teams with 603 points in USU's first-ever appearance as a team in the national championships meet. Maggard, who placed 12th last year with a time of 30:03.09, is the only Aggie with multiple cross country All-American accolades.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
 – Sophomore guard Sam Merrill (Bountiful, Utah) scored in double figures in two games last week as Utah State went 2-1 with home wins against Montana State (81-73) and Mississippi Valley State (83-47), followed by a 79-66 loss at No. 17 Gonzaga. Against the Bobcats, Merrill finished with nine points, shooting 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from the floor, 40.0 percent (2-of-5) from behind the 3-point line and 50.0 percent (1-of-2) at the free throw line, while adding a team-best four assists, along with three rebounds and two steals. Against the Delta Devils, Merrill scored in double figures for the first time this season, finishing with 10 points, and shot 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from the floor, 50.0 percent (1-of-2) from behind the 3-point line and 100.0 percent (1-of-1) from the free throw line. Merrill also added five assists, without a turnover, two rebounds and one steal in the game. Against the Bulldogs, Merrill finished with a team-high 19 points, shooting 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the floor, 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from behind the 3-point line and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) at the free throw line, while adding a team-best six assists, along with four rebounds. For the week, Merrill averaged 12.7 points per game, shooting 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from behind the 3-point line and 66.7 percent (4-of-6) at the free throw line. Merrill also totaled 15 assists, nine rebounds and three steals during the week.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Sophomore guard Olivia West (Launceston, Tasmania, Australia) led Utah State to a 1-1 home record last week as it defeated Dixie State, 92-72, and fell to Arizona, 65-49. Against the Trailblazers, West was one of four Aggies to score in double figures, tallying 12 points. She also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win. Against the Wildcats, West led the team in scoring with 13 points, while adding three rebounds and two assists. On the week, West averaged 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from the floor, 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from the 3-point line and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from the free throw line.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY – Junior Alyssa Snyder (Coalville, Utah) became just the second Aggie woman to earn cross country All-American honors as she finished 25th at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships, held last week in Louisville, Ky. Snyder finished the 6-kilometer course in 20:03.39 to lead USU to a 14th-place finish out of 31 teams with 395 points in USU's first-ever appearance as a team in the national championships meet.

FOOTBALL – Senior running back LaJuan Hunt (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) rushed for 111 yards on just 13 carries (8.5 ypr) and scored a touchdown on a 48-yard run in Utah State’s 38-0 shutout home win against Mountain West-foe Hawai’i last weekend to help the Aggies become bowl eligible for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Hunt, who also had one reception for 26 yards in the game, has now recorded back-to-back 100-yard rushing games for the first time in his career. Overall, it is his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and the fourth of his career. 

VOLLEYBALL – Senior outside Lauren Anderson (Peoria, Ariz.) recorded a pair of 20-plus kill performances last week as Utah State wrapped up its regular season with a 3-1 loss at home to Nevada, followed by a 3-1 victory on the road at San José State. Against the Wolf Pack, Anderson recorded 22 kills, hitting .395 (22-5-43), and added 12 kills for her team-best 11th double-double of the season. Against the Spartans, Anderson tied her career high with 23 kills, hitting .463 (23-4-41), and added five blocks, four digs and two assists. For the week, Anderson totaled 45 kills, averaging 5.62 per set, hit .429 (45-9-84) and added 16 digs, six blocks, two assists and one service ace.
