LOGAN, Utah – Utah State cross country runner Dillon Maggard has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week, for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 20, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
It is the fifth time this year and sixth time in Maggard’s career that he has been named USU’s student-athlete of the week.
The native of Kirkland, Wash., earned All-America honors last weekend by placing 12th with a time of 30:03.9 at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Championships, held in Terre Haute, Ind. Maggard’s 12th-place finish is the best-ever by a Utah State cross country runner at the national championships. Maggard is also the second male and third overall Aggie to receive All-America honors in school history.

MEN’S BASKETBALL – Freshman guard Koby McEwen (Toronto, Canada) led Utah State in scoring and rebounding last week as the Aggies posted a 93-84 home victory against NJIT and an 85-51 home win against Idaho State. Against the Highlanders, McEwen scored 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added five rebounds, three assists, one block and a team-high two steals in 33 minutes. Against the Bengals, McEwen scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and added six assists, one block and one steal in 27 minutes. For the week, McEwen averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks, while shooting 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the floor and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from behind the 3-point line.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Freshman forward Jessie Geer (Gillette, Wyo.), helped Utah State to a 2-0 home record last week, as the Aggies defeated Montana State, 64-56, and UC Irvine, 66-52. Against the Bobcats, Geer tallied seven points while adding two rebounds and four steals. She shot a perfect 3-of-3 from the field, including 1-for-1 from the 3-point line. Against the Anteaters, Geer scored a career-high nine points to go with one rebound, a career-best seven assists and four steals. She shot 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the field and 33.3 percent (1-of-3) from the 3-point line. On the week, Geer averaged 8.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game and shot 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the field and 50.0 percent (2-of-4) from the free throw line.
FOOTBALL – Junior running back Tonny Lindsey, Jr. (Long Beach, Calif.) rushed for a career-high 168 yards on 21 carries in Utah State’s 38-37 loss at Nevada last weekend. Lindsey also had one touchdown in the game on a career-long 68-yard run.
VOLLEYBALL – Senior outside Kayle Kamalu-Smith (Kaysville, Utah) averaged a double-double last week as the Aggies went 1-1 in Mountain West play with a 3-1 loss at Fresno State, followed by a 3-0 home victory against San Jose State. Against the Bulldogs, Kamalu-Smith recorded her team-best sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs, while adding one ace and one solo block. Against the Spartans, Kamalu-Smith hit a career-best .625 with 17 kills on 24 attempts and only two errors. She also added one ace and five digs against SJSU. For the week, Kamalu-Smith recorded 28 kills and 20 digs, hit .298 (28-11-57) and added two aces and one solo block.
