FRESNO, Calif. - Junior reserve guard Brian Green scored a season-high 17 points, including 14 in the second half, to lead Utah State to an easy 69-43 road win against Fresno State here inside the Save Mart Center Thursday night. The 26-point road win for USU is its largest away from home since defeating Idaho on the road by 38 points (80-42) during the 2005-06 season.
Utah State, who has now won a season-high tying four straight games, improves to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in Western Athletic Conference play with the win. USU has also won six straight games against Fresno State, including three straight on the road. FSU falls to 10-10 on the year and 3-3 in league play with the loss.
The victory was also the 499th in Stew Morrill's 24 years as a collegiate head coach as he is 499-235 overall and 281-97 in 12 years at Utah State. Morrill will go for his 500th career win on Saturday at Idaho who is coached by Don Verlin. Verlin spent 15 years as an assistant to Morrill at USU and Colorado State.
Green, who also had three assists and two rebounds in the game, was 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range in 19 minutes off the bench. Senior guard Jared Quayle had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in just 28 minutes. Junior forward Tai Wesley added 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks in just 23 minutes, while junior guard Tyler Newbold had 10 points and six boards.
Greg Smith was the only Fresno State player to score in double-figures as he finished the game with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Leading 32-18 at the break, Newbold hit his second three-pointer of the game on Utah State's first possession of the second half to give the Aggies a 17-point lead. Fresno State then went on a 13-2 run to get within six at 37-31 with 14:44 remaining, only to see USU go on a 32-6 run over the next 11:51 to take its biggest lead of the game at 69-37 on a layup from sophomore center Modou Niang. The Bulldogs then scored the final six points of the game to make the final margin 26.
Utah State finished the game by shooting 48.0 percent from the field (24-50), 57.1 percent from three-point range (12-21) and 64.3 percent at the free throw line (9-14). Fresno State shot just 28.6 percent for the game (14-49), including just 23.5 percent from behind the arc (4-17) and 57.9 percent at the free throw line (11-19).
The 12 made three-pointers by Utah State are its second-most this year and tied for the eighth-most in a single-game in school history. USU made a season-high 13 three-pointers against Utah Valley at home on Dec. 12, 2009.
USU also continued its dominance on the boards as it out-rebounded FSU, 38-29, and has been out-rebounded just twice on the season. The Aggies also had 17 assists, seven steals, six blocks and just 10 turnovers in the game after committing three in its first four possessions.
With the game tied at five early on, Utah State scored eight straight points to lead 13-5 with 12:29 to play in the half as Quayle hit a pair of three-pointers and Wesley scored on a jump hook. The Bulldogs scored the next four points and trailed by four at 15-11 with 9:00 minutes remaining before the Aggies finished the half on a 17-7 run to take a 14-point advantage into the locker room.
Quayle led Utah State with nine first-half points and Wesley had six as USU shot 42.9 percent (12-28) overall and was 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range. Fresno State made just 6-of-24 (.250) field goals in the first half, including just 2-of-8 from behind the arc.
Utah State will conclude its two-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Idaho (8-8, 1-4) at 6 p.m. (MT).
