Carroll Scores 18 To Lead USU To 72-51 Win Vs. South Dakota State

LOGAN, Utah - Jaycee Carroll scored 18 points to lead four Aggies in double figures as Utah State raced to its 13th straight home win as the Aggies defeated South Dakota State 72-51 in a non-conference men's basketball game here Friday night. With the win, Utah State improved to 14-4 overall. South Dakota State fell to 5-14.
Carroll hit four of eight three-pointers en route to his game-high 18 points. Nate Harris added 15 points on six of eight shooting, while David Pak made four of five threes en route to 14 points and Cass Matheus had 10 points and a team-best six rebounds.
South Dakota State, which is playing its second year in Division I, received 12 points from Andre Gilbert and 11 points and 11 rebounds from Mohamed Berte.
The Aggies shot 54 percent from the field, while holding the smaller Jack Rabbits to 33.3 percent shooting. USU also out-rebounded the visitors 37-27.
Utah State jumped out to a 13-1 advantage to start the game making six of its first seven shots and after gaining a 30-12 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half saw the visitors go on a 12-3 run to end the half. In that stretch, the Aggies went six full minutes without a basket, relying on a free throw from Nate Bendall and two free throws from Jaycee Carroll to take a 33-24 lead into the lockerroom.
Harris scored seven points in a 16-4 USU run to start the second half as the Aggies pushed their margin to 49-28 early in the final period. The Aggies led by as many as 23 points (54-31) while cruising to the victory.
Pak handed out seven assists as USU was credited with 18 assists on its 27 baskets. Matheus recorded three blocks, while Carroll came up with four steals.
Utah State will return to the court and to WAC play hosting Hawai'I in an ESPN televised game on Monday at 10 p.m. MST.
