Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"It got a little scary there at the end when we started to struggle with their press, but it's really a good win for us. Our guys battled hard and I thought deserved to win. We just really competed. We're getting a little better offensively. It's nice to see them rewarded for playing that hard. We've played that hard a couple of times and lost close ones. It's nice to win a fairly close one. Jarred (Shaw) had a huge night. Spencer (Butterfield) was Spencer. He was tough, hard-nosed, all those things. We out-rebounded them which is quite an accomplishment with their size and athleticism, so we feel pretty good about it."
Junior Center Jarred Shaw...
"I'm glad we got that monkey off our backs. We needed that win and we fought for it and got it. It was a big week of preparation for us. We just tried to stay positive the whole week. We worked hard, got our rest, did our thing and it showed tonight. I just played my game. I didn't worry about anything or anyone else. I just stayed focused and played my game. This is a huge step for us, it's definitely a step in the right direction. We'll keep getting better. We go down to BYU Tuesday. It's not a conference game, but we'll play like it's a conference game. We're just trying to get better to be ready to play in March."
Sophomore Forward Ben Clifford...
"When we went down there, they really beat us up. They just out-physicalled us and got in our heads. Tonight we came with the mindset that they weren't going to do that. I don't think we let them. When you play against someone like that (Sim Bhullar), you can't do pump-fakes and that sort of thing because they'll just block it. You have to stick to regular post moves. He played great. We couldn't really make it fall from three, but that's ok, we spread it out on the floor a little bit and opened up on the inside."
New Mexico State Head Coach Marvin Menzies...
"I was really proud of my guys, I liked the way they fought. Utah State did a great job tonight. They came out and threw the first punch, came out with more energy than we did in the first few minutes. They made shots, they were 4-for-8 at the half. We did a much better job in the second half. It was one of those games where you've got to get in a better rhythm and flow than we had. Defensively, our guys never gave up. I think we've been very scrappy lately. We made it a four-point game after they'd been up 11. It was just a good job on our guys to show their character and what they're made of. I'll reserve all my comments about the officiating until I get a chance to watch the film. We'll figure it out. It's life on the road. I've been here before and we'll be here again."
