RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Spencer Nelson scored a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds and five assists to lead Utah State to an easy 73-48 Big West basketball win at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside Thursday night.

Utah State, who improved to 19-6 on the year and 10-4 in the Big West Conference, recorded its fifth-straight road win by at least 20 points. UC Riverside dropped to 8-15 overall and 3-10 in league play with the loss.

Both teams shot the ball well early in the game as the Highlanders made its first six shots, while the Aggies connected on six of its first seven shots. With the game tied at 14, Utah State went on a 19-4 run over the next nine minutes to take its biggest lead of the half at 31-18 en route to its 39-27 half-time lead.

After making its first six field goals, the Highlanders made just 10 of its final 44 attempts.

Nelson led USU with 13 points in the first-half, as the Aggies made 58.6 percent of its field goals.

Klaus Schille of UC Riverside converted a three-point play to begin the second half to cut Utah State's lead to nine, but USU scored eight straight points to put the game away. Utah State's biggest lead of the contest came with 4:27 remaining on a dunk by Jason Williams to give the Aggies a 71-40 advantage before notching the 25-point win.

Nate Harris was the only other Utah State player to score in double-figures as he finished with 12 points, while Jaycee Carroll and David Pak each had nine.

Schille and Larry Cunningham each had 10 points to lead UC Riverside.

Utah State, who entered the game leading the nation in field goal percentage at 53.6 percent, shot 59.3 percent from the field despite converting just 3-11 three-point attempts.

 

 

The Aggies also held UC Riverside to just 32.0 percent from the field and USU out-rebounded the Highlanders 38-23. USU also recorded a season-high 27 assists in the game on 32 made field goals.

Utah State returns to action on Sat., Feb. 19 at Cal State Fullerton at 3:05 p.m. (MST).
