Carroll And Nelson Lead Aggies To 87-49 Win Against UC Irvine

LOGAN, Utah - Freshman Jaycee Carroll scored Utah State's first 12 points en route to a game-best 22 points, while senior teammate Spencer Nelson added 21 on the night he was named to the school's all-century team as the Aggies defeated UC Irvine 87-49 in Big West basketball action here Saturday night.
With the win USU improved to 21-7 overall and 12-5 in conference play. The visiting Anteaters fell to 13-12 and 6-10.
Carroll drilled four straight three-pointers in the first four minutes of the game, but he was matched early by UC Irvine's Aaron Fitzgerald, who scored seven of the Anteaters' first eight points.
On the night Caroll made six of seven threes, while hitting eight of 10 shots overall. Nelson put together a night of 21 points, five rebounds and five assists in just 25 minutes of play. They were the only two Aggies in double figures. Fitzgerald led UCI with 17 points, while Greg Ethington added 10.
USU took a 44-30 halftime advantage and quickly turned it into a 69-33 lead after starting the second period on a 25-3 run. The Aggies never looked back in posting the 38-point victory, its largest of the season.
USU connected on 55.6 percent shooting, including a 62.5 percent mark from three-point range. The Aggies struggled at the free throw line for the second straight game, converting just 17 of 26 for a 65.4 percent mark.
USU also used a 36-27 rebounding advantage over UCI and held the Anteaters to 36 percent shooting.
Chris Huber came off the bench to match a season high with five assists, while Cass Matheus, who made his second straight start at center, responded with six points, seven rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes of play.
The Aggies will wrap up the regular season hosting Idaho on Friday, March 4 at 7:05 p.m. USU will honor seniors Calvin Brown, John Neil, Ian McVey, Spencer Nelson, Jason Williams and Tyler Williams prior to tipoff.
The Big West Conference Tournament will take place at Anaheim, Calif., March 9-12.
