Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"Our guys came out and played really hard, really active basketball in the first half and got ourselves a comfortable lead. Then we did what we needed to do to finish it up. We were active, we had a lot of deflections offensively. They had a really hard time scoring and that first half kind of set the tone of the game. Obviously it's positive to have Spencer (Butterfield) back. I mean, the guy had 20 rebounds, that's pretty amazing. You look at the number of good players we've lost and then you get down to where you lose another one like we did, it's just too much. Having him back makes me pine for the fact that it would be nice to have a couple more back and wonder what might have been. He's got a great nose for the basketball. His line, other than missing a few shots, was obviously impressive. Jarred (Shaw) had a lot of nice shots. It's a good win. We've got 20 of them and a lot of teams would like to have 20 wins. We'll see what we can do on Saturday."
Junior Guard/Forward Spencer Butterfield... "It was nice. The team was just boxing out so I took advantage of it. It was just going my way tonight. Rebounds are my pride, I don't care about points as much. We really came out and had some energy in the defense with a lot of deflections. We just got a lot of hands on the ball. It was all really helpful. Marcel (Davis) got some good steals. We needed to bounce back and this was a statement game."
Sophomore Forward Ben Clifford...
"The first half we played really hard. We got a lot of deflections on defense and I think that's really what helped us. They scored 15 in the first half. That's what we wanted to do and we accomplished that so that was good.
On Having Spencer Butterfield back:
Heck yeah, we had some extra juice. I mean, 20 rebounds? The point guards and all the guards got good penetration and got a couple of easy buckets. I was just getting open, that's credit to the rest of the team. Last year it was a struggle to get to 20 wins, it felt like. It feels good getting to 20. It would be nice to get more, but hopefully it gets us some momentum going into the WAC Tournament."
Texas State Head Coach Doug Davalos...
"You have to score in basketball to win. We missed every shot that we had down there. They played a 3-2 zone, the same zone they played in the second half that we got 46 on. We missed a ton of open shots. We came in, the crowd was tremendous here and I feel like it affected us early in the game. We dug ourselves such a hole. Vonn Jones left his heart and soul out there, made big play after big play. The problem is that two of our best players are both our point guards. It's hard to put them both on the floor at the same time because they both get tired at the same time when you do that. They're two of our best contributors."
