LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"We played hard, that was the most positive thing. There are a lot of execution things that are not there, but I was pleased by how hard we played defensively. On the boards, we were working hard. Offense was really bad in the first half, we shot the ball better in the second half, but we had a lot of guys going in and out. That always makes it a little bit hard to get a flow going. We played a lot of different people. I was pleased to get everybody some time. It served its purpose, that is an exhibition game, you are trying to find some things out about your team, and we can watch the film and get better. We found out some things, it is a Division II team, a very good Division II team that was good to come in a play us. They made the NCAA Tournament last year, and that was a lot better than some exhibition games we could have had."
Preston Medlin was good early on, did that set the tempo for the rest of the game? "He was about the only guy that could score there for a little while. After we got going a little bit, it was nice to not have to play him much in the second half. He is going to have a lot of games where he is going to play a lot of minutes. He just makes plays, he makes plays for himself and he makes plays for others. He is a good basketball player."
Utah State Junior Shooting Guard Preston Medlin...
How did it feel to get back on the Spectrum floor tonight?
"It was awesome. The atmosphere is great as everyone knows, so all of that work over the summer, all of the weights, all of the pick-up games is for this; it's for our team and for our fans. It was a good game tonight and we improved in a lot of areas, so that is a good thing for us."
Talk about the young players on this team and how it is all meshing...
"These young guys are great. Obviously, tonight they played pretty well and they are doing for us. Everybody is finding where they need to play at and what their rolls are. Tonight's game was great for us, it helped all of the guys see what it is like to play in the Spectrum."
Grand Canyon Head Coach Russ Pennell...
"We played a very good basketball team, first of all. They're a team that's the pre-season pick to win the Western Athletic Conference. I was very impressed with Utah State, and I think they forced us into some things that are kind of uncharacteristic of what we do. I thought we looked like a team who haven't played together yet. We tried to add some new pieces. When a team puts a little run on you, it's kind of hard to focus on what you're trying to do and what your strengths are."
