LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State vs. UC San Diego Oct. 28, 2011
Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"The purpose of this game was to get us to play someone other than ourselves, get to play against other people and to get some missed free throws out of our system. In our scrimmages, we have been making close to 80% that tells you the jitters that some of our new guys have and some of our veterans even have. Other than that, San Diego was out manned. They run good stuff; they are well coached. Two of their better players didn't play tonight, and they were just out manned. In these exhibition games, you can only play against non-Division I schools. The other thing that you can do is scrimmage and not have a crowd; so you take your pick. I thought that it was good to get everyone some minutes, when we get the chance to evaluate film we will know more. We played hard. We made some mistakes, but I was glad that we played hard."
Sophomore Guard Preston Medlin ...
"We have a lot of new guys, but we came out hard, and fought and it was good. Coach really emphasizes defense. It's a huge part of the game. We focus on that now and eventually the offense will come. I got some extra work in the gym this week. I love being back out there. I came back pumped and ready to play and had a great time. Having last year off, I learned a lot. I got to sit behind two guys who knew what was going on. I got to really figure out Coach Morrill's system. Come out, hit the shots, and create options for everyone else on the team, and come out and play hard defense."
UC San Diego Head Coach Chris Carlson...
"I know there's been a lot of talk on Utah State and the newness of the program, but I'd hate to have to come play them in January. I can tell you that. They did a lot of good things tonight, a lot of good things that we weren't quite up to the task on, in terms of guarding especially. They are a very well-coached group, and they're going to be fine. Logan, Utah doesn't need to worry about the Aggies. For us, we did some good things, especially in the second half. We need to grow off those opportunities and those situations. Those are wasted opportunities if we don't grow from them."
