LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"Idaho State did exactly what you need to do on the road against a team you have concerns with. They made the game ugly. It was just an ugly basketball game. We helped make it ugly. Their zone was very, very good. We've got a lot of new guys who were kind of shell-shocked. They played the 1-1-3 that we were prepared for, but they're better than our scout team. We made some uncharacteristic mistakes. Hopefully, we can learn from it. As I told our guys, it's nice when you can still get a win when you didn't play well. Idaho State played well, and we aren't used to playing that unconventional of a defense, especially the first game of the year. We had some guys lose some confidence out there. Spencer Butterfield made some big shots. He hasn't played very much, but he's a tough-minded kid."
Junior Guard/Forward Spencer Butterfield...
"It was tough the first half just getting a couple of minutes, but I knew going into the second half that I wanted to come back and have a better second half. When coach put me in, I was confident, and I knew that I could make some shots for the team and my teammates were able to find me open. Idaho State had a really tough zone. They were moving, they were denying our wings, and we just needed to move the ball a little bit better and once we started to do that we started to get a few more open looks. I think that is why I was able to find some open shots."
Idaho State Head Coach Bill Evans...
"My guys played really hard. That's where things have to start. If you don't play, you don't have a chance. I was proud of the way they played. I wish we could have scored 10 more points. We've got to somehow be able to throw the ball in the post for the easy baskets. You can't live and die from the arc. The kid that made the threes, Spencer Butterfield, hadn't made a three all year and got them against us, and that was the difference. He's a good player and we knew that. We didn't do as good of a job getting to him as we needed to. We've got Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday to get better."
