NJIT at Utah State Post-Game Quotes

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Utah State Head Coach Tim Duryea:

“It was a struggle, the second half for sure. The first half we had a little bit more of a flow going than in the second half. To start the second half, it felt like we were really on our heels, got a little stagnant offensively, shot them a little quick offensively and then were on our heels defensively. We softend up a little bit. In the timeout about halfway through the second half, I really challenged our guys to be the toughest team the last eight-to-10 minutes, and we were. We got on the defensive glass, we got some defelections, challenged some shots — they made some really, really hard shots the last 10 minutes, but I didn’t think that was because of a lack of toughness or effort by us. And I told them after the game I was proud of them because the toughest team did win the game in the last 10 minutes, and that’s something we’ve talked about a lot.”

Utah State Freshman Guard Sam Merrill:

“Credit to them, that’s a good team, they played really well. Obviously, it was pretty fun for all of us, lots of points. We did a good job defensively down the stretch, we got stops when we needed to get stops. And offensively we did a really, really good job. We had a bunch of turnovers in the first half, but we were able to lower those in the second half and that helped us out. The focus is always defense and getting those stops there at the end. They hit a couple tough ones late, but those stops really helped us push ourselves to that win.”

NJIT Head Coach Brian Kennedy:

“We knew we were playing a very good Utah State team. They’re a well-coached team and an excellent offensive team with a lot of weapons out there. I was happy with the way our guys competed and hung in there. It’s always hard to go on the road, traveling across the country, but what you can ask for as a coach is to have a chance to win the game. I thought we did that. We had a couple of turnovers at the end that increased the deficit, but I was really happy with the way our guys competed.”
