LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"Like I told the guys, we played really, really hard. They have nothing to feel bad about in terms of effort. We played a very good Saint Mary's team. They have an NBA player who is something special and he did a great job of controlling that game. I think we're going to have a good basketball team, I really do. I'm not doom-and-gloom about that game and I don't want our kids to be. We've just got some guys who need to find their way. We were nervous, we didn't shoot the ball well. We hung in there and kept competing, but we just couldn't make shots. With that poor of a percentage, it's obviously hard to win, especially against a really good team."
"Our number one key was rebounding the ball, and if you'd told me we out-rebounded them by that margin, I would have thought we'd have been in great shape. Kyisean (Reed) had games last year that he kind of disappeared when it got really physical, so it was good to see him play the way he did in the physical-type game. He was active and playing really hard. Once Jarred (Shaw) settled in, I thought he played pretty good too. They did a great job on Preston (Medlin) and we had a hard time shooting the ball. You have to give them credit. Dellavedova just makes plays for everybody, including himself."
Utah State Junior Center Jarred Shaw...
"I felt like we came out and played hard tonight, we just couldn't make a couple of shots tonight and we came up a little short on the offensive end. I feel like if we keep the same intensity and we play hard every game that we will be a very good basketball team. They are a good defensive team and like I said we just couldn't make some shots tonight but those shots will fall as the season goes on. We will think about this one tonight and forget about it tomorrow because we have another big game coming up Saturday."
Talk about the physical play tonight...
"I am not trying to get pushed around out there, my nickname has been Skinny all of my life and I am getting a little tired of hearing it. I am tired of being bullied and pushed around so I felt like tonight was a good night to come out and man up. I want to be a physical player."
Saint Mary's Head Coach Randy Bennett...
"This is a big win. This is a tough place to come in and play. It's an outstanding program, really well-coached. We have a ton of respect for this program. Our players understood that and they were very focused coming in. This was a funny game. They beat us so bad on the boards and inside, and we dominated on the perimeter and came out on top. It was a good thing we shot the ball well. I thought we were pretty good offensively and that defensively we were good, we just got smashed on the boards. We have a lot to work on, but we'll start with rebounding."
