LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball (3-4) lost 62-61 against Indiana State (4-4) Saturday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Senior guard Shane Rector led the Aggies with 14 points, four steals, two assists and a block. Rector also had a career high-tying five rebounds. Freshman guard Koby McEwen also tied his career high in assists with six, along with 13 points, seven rebounds and a block.
Senior wing Jalen Moore added 13 points to move up to No. 22 on the all-time scoring list, matching Jim Boatwright with 1,238 career points. Moore led the team with eight rebounds, two assists and a block. Sophomore forward Norbert Janicek rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.
A couple of buckets by Janicek and a jumper from McEwen gave the Aggies an early 6-3 lead with 18:12 left to play in the first half. After Indiana State tied it with a three, 6-6, with 16:26 remaining in the first, the Aggies went on a 17-3 run over the next seven-and-a-half minutes to open a double-digit margin, 23-9, with just under nine minutes remaining in the half. Utah State continued to lock up the Sycamores down the stretch as a Rector steal led to a McEwen bucket to put the Aggies up 35-21 at the half.
Utah State outscored Indiana State 20-6 in the paint in the first half and held Indiana State to shooting 26.7 percent from the floor. Janicek was flawless in the first half, converting 4-of-4 from the floor.
The Aggies maintained the double-digit lead for the first four minutes of the second half. Back-to-back blocks from Rector and Moore kept the 11-point lead, 39-28, with 16:21 remaining. However, Indiana State went on a 12-0 run to bring the game within two, 39-37, with just over thirteen minutes left. The Sycamores tied the game at 42 five minutes later, but junior guard Julion Pearre answered with a triple on the very next possession. The Aggies kept the advantage, leading by as many as six, 52-46, behind free throws by Rector with 4:43 left. Indiana State continued to fight and tied it up at 58-58 with just over two minutes left.
The Sycamores took their first lead since the first half, 60-59, on a layup with 1:40 left. After a missed jumper from Moore, the Aggies were forced to foul, but Indiana State missed the free throw with 20 seconds left. In the next Aggie possession, McEwen was fouled under the basket with 10 seconds on the clock and knocked down both free throws to give the Aggies the 61-60 lead. Indiana State collected a loose ball in the closing seconds and a layup led to the 62-61 victory.
ISU was led by junior guard Brenton Scott with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Matt Van Scyoc had 14 points, three rebounds and an assist and senior guard Everett Clemons led with eight rebounds, five points and a steal.
Utah State finished the game shooting 37.3 percent (22-of-59), including 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from behind the 3-point line, while shooting 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free throw line. Indiana State shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor, 37.9 percent (11-of-29) from behind the 3-point line and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from the free throw line.
The Aggies will next face Great Falls (7-2) on Tuesday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (MT).
