FORT WAYNE, Ind. - David Simon scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne to a 64-59 upset win against Utah State at Memorial Coliseum Tuesday night. With the win, the Mastodons improve to 3-5 on the season.

Spencer Nelson and Nate Harris both scored 20 points for Utah State, who had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-2 on the year.

Utah State led 54-51 with 5:06 remaining in the game after a dunk by Spencer Nelson to give the Aggies its biggest lead of the second half, but the Mastodons scored seven straight points over the next three minutes to take a four point lead and then scored the final four points of the game to notch the five-point win.

Nelson scored the first five points of the game for Utah State, giving the Aggies its biggest lead of the night, but IPFW answered with an 8-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 8-7 with 15:18 remaining. The Mastodons increased its lead to 10 at 33-23 with 1:22 remaining in the half and went into the locker room up eight at 33-25.

The Mastodons made seven of nine three-pointers in the first half, while Utah State shot a season-low 34.6 percent from the field in the opening stanza.

IPFW tied its biggest lead of the night twice in the second half at 35-25 and 37-27 before the Aggies slowly chipped away, eventually taking their first lead of the second half at 50-49 on a layup by Harris with 6:50 remaining.

Nelson added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the contest as he recorded his second straight 20-point game, while Harris notched his third straight.

For the game, Utah State shot 44.9 percent from the field and just 20.0 percent from three-point range (2-10). IPFW shot 47.3 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from behind the arc (9-18). The Mastodons also out-rebounded the Aggies 35-27 and recorded seven blocks in the game to USUs zero.

 

 

Utah State returns home to face in-state rival Weber State on Sat., Dec. 11 at 7:05 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
