Utah State Men's Basketball Loses 77-67 to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah State men's basketball (5-6) lost 77-67 to Utah (7-2) on Saturday night at Vivint Smart Home Arena in the inaugural game of the Beehive Classic.

Utah State was led by junior guard DeAngelo Isby with a career-high 24 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Quinn Taylor also scored a career high with 22 points, while adding six boards, two assists and a block. The duo's combined 46 points added to the bench's total season high of 57. 

Utah State found itself in a hole early on after Utah used a 14-0 run to lead 19-2 with 14:01 left to play in half. The Utes maintained a double-digit lead until the Aggies went on a 12-0 run to pull within nine, 45-36, with eight seconds to go. The run was led by Taylor who had a 9-0 run of his own after a couple of and-1's and a three. Utah led 47-36 heading into the break.

Sophomore guard Sam Merrill opened the second half with a trey to make it an eight-point game, 47-39, with 19:36 to go. Utah then went on a 7-0 run, but the Aggies responded with a 6-0 run of their own after layups from Taylor, Isby and redshirt freshman forward Klay Stall brought it back to nine, 54-45 with 14:41 left to play. The Aggies came within six following a Merrill three, 58-52, with 12:38 to play. Senior forward Alex Dargenton knocked down a pair of free throws and the Aggies were within four, 58-54, with 11:42 left to play. Utah responded with an 8-0 run to extend the lead back out to 12, 66-54, with 7:45 remaining. The Aggies answered with a 10-3 run to bring it within five, 69-64, with 2:18 to go. Utah would make eight free throws in the final two minutes to win it, 77-67.

Utah was led by senior guard Justin Bibbins with 16 points, along with seven assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block. Senior forward Tyler Rawson had 16 points, six boards, one block and a steal. Junior guard Parker Van Dyke had 10 points and an assist. 

Utah State finished the game shooting 36.7 percent (22-of-60), including 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from behind the arc, while shooting 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the free throw line. Utah shot 51.1 percent (24-of-47) from the floor, 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from behind the 3-point line and 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the free throw line.

Utah State returns to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Saturday as it takes on Life Pacific (6-6). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
