LOGAN, Utah -
Senior Center Jarred Shaw
"Coach told us that we needed start the game off with a lot of intensity and a lot of effort. We felt like our defense was a lot better in this game than the last two games. In practice, he just talked about getting a good start defensively, and I think that we did that. I think that if you execute defensively the offensive end will open up for you."
On sustaining the first half lead... "We had some slips in the second half. I feel like we got better. We just have to sustain it longer. The last 10 minutes of the game we kind of slipped on defense. But the improvement that we made to get better is a step in the right direction."
Senior guard Preston Medlin
On the first half... "The first half was great. Obviously, it was a good half. We played good defense; we played good offense. We were playing hard; we got the open shots we want, so that was a great half for us."
On his play throughout the half... "I felt great as you could probably see out there. It was awesome, my teammates were getting me open, I was getting some wide-open looks, and they were going in tonight. That's what I try to do every night. It was good tonight, and it was good to get some confidence back."
On the defensive play... "I felt like we played a lot harder in practice and a lot better in practice. That really helped us and that made us better for this game because that's what translates over is practice. We had a good week of practice, and that's what we need this week, too.
Utah State head coach Stew Morrill
Opening statement... "We really played hard and guarded hard in the first half. It's an area we worked on all week. We stressed trying to come out and do what we had done in practice. We had a good week of practice. We competed hard, and I thought our guys really tried to take it to the court, and that showed in the first half. We shared the ball; we were pretty good offensively. The last 10 minutes, the game was out of reach, and we didn't play very well. But for three quarters of the game, we played well and we played hard, so we'll take the win and try and keep getting better."
Utah Valley head coach Dick Hunsaker
Opening statement... "In the second half, we came back and fought. I guess its on me. I didn't have the kids ready tonight. I thought coming off the Weber State game that we would have good emotions. We were facing a Utah State team that was coming off two-straight losses. They came out in the first half and made a lot of shots, 60% percent of the shots. We didn't do a good job defending. Give them credit for the way they played."
