Nelson Scores A Career-High 26 Points To Lead Utah State To An 84-62 Win At BYU

PROVO, Utah - Spencer Nelson scored a career-high 26 points and added 11 rebounds and seven assists, while Jaycee Carroll scored a career-high 21 points to lead Utah State to an 84-62 road win against Brigham Young Saturday night.
With the win, USU improved to 7-2 on the season and 4-0 against its in-state rivals, claiming the Old Oquirrh Bucket for the second time in the last four years and for the seventh time overall. BYU dropped to 2-7 overall with the loss.
The win also marks the first time in school history that Utah State went undefeated against its in-state rivals of BYU, Utah and Weber State.
Nelson scored 14 points in the first half as Utah State turned a 30-26 lead into a 41-27 half-time advantage by out-scoring Brigham Young 11-1 in the final 2:21 of the opening period.
Utah State then began the second half by scoring the first seven points to open a 21-point lead with 18:54 remaining. The Aggies would lead by as many as 24 points on two separate occasions in the second period en route to notching the 22 point win.
BYU tried to get back into the game midway into the second half as they cut USU's lead down to 14 at 65-51 with 7:01 remaining, but the Aggies responded by scoring 11 of the next 15 points to get its lead back to 21.
Nelson, whose previous scoring high was 24 against Hawai'I last year, recorded his 16th career double-double in the game. Nate Harris added 16 points and six rebounds.
Austin Ainge paced Brigham Young with 21 points, while Mike Rose added 14.
For the game, Utah State shot 50.8 percent from the field including 9-18 from three-point range. USU also out-rebounded BYU 46-29 and held the Cougars to just 39.7 percent shooting.
Utah State returns to action on Thur., Dec. 23 as it opens Big West Conference play at the University of Idaho.
