LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill...
"I thought our guys played really hard. I told them afterward that their effort was really good. We defended hard, we got a lot of good deflections. They struggled some against our zone. It was a good win for us under the circumstances. I'm really pleased. All our guys did things well. We had a lot of different guys contribute. It's pretty amazing when you only get 36 shots. It's pretty unusual. They've been holding their opponents to 38 percent, so offensively we were pretty solid as well. It's one we needed to have and we'll move on to tomorrow night. When you have three games in a tournament, you don't have much time to think about this one, you just move on to the next one."
Senior Guard/Forward Spencer Butterfield...
"At halftime Coach came in and the first thing he said was `Let's have a good second half.' We just wanted to have a solid, all-around game. I think we came out with a little bit of energy. We played a lot of zone tonight. We had to move around and make some things happen. They're a driving team. They really like to get a lot of points in the paint. They have some really good athletes that can drive good inside. That zone shrinks our defense a little bit and closes down some lanes for them."
Sophomore Forward Kyle Davis...
"It feels really good to start out the tournament with a win against a good Western Illinois team. We were told all throughout the week that they were going to be really hard on defense, which they were. They are really physical and pack it in. They swarm the ball. It was good to see us come out and be able to match them on defense. I think that was the real highlight of the game for us."
Western Illinois Head Coach Jim Molinari...
"I thought our fight was good. Utah State is great at home. In this tournament, Stew Morrill is 34-0 and 75-3 in December. They don't lose much at home and they run their offense great. I thought we fought hard, they just overpowered us because they're so much stronger. We just got stopped a lot. We've got to keep fighting. We have to keep our big guys out of trouble in the first half. I got on them about that at halftime and it was better in the second half."
