Utah State Head Coach Tim Duryea
"It was a pretty well played college basketball game. The difference was, at winning time late when it was a one possession game either way, I thought they made some shots. We made some big mistakes. It came down to that. I told our guys 'our defense let us down a little bit.' Not in terms of effort, we had a lot of good defensive possessions but didn't take away what we were trying to take away.
“We gave them too many rhythm 3's in the second half. We had some possessions where we had tough luck too. I don't know how many points they scored with under five seconds on the shot clock where we broke down right at the end or they hit a tough shot.
“My hat is off to them. They were tremendous from start to finish. In the first half, both teams were really good on both ends of the floor. We weren't making defensive mistakes and neither were they and both teams were playing well offensively with a lot of purpose.
“Second half, we got the lead and our shot selection went downhill for a short time. We lost our way a little offensively. Shane (Rector) forced a shot from the wing, Jalen (Moore) forced a shot from the top. Late in the game we tried to play through Jalen (Moore) in the post, we got some good looks around the basket we just didn't convert."
Utah State Senior Wing Jalen Moore
"Tough loss, the game could have gone either way. That's really all I have to say. It was a tough loss going into a break. It was like a league game. We learn some things from our losses, hopefully it won't happen again."
On the non-conference schedule...
"That's the whole point of the non-conference schedule, to play good teams that are going to help you going into conference play. We played good teams in Cancun, then Weber State, BYU and UVU. Good teams like that get you ready for the teams that we will play in conference. We play tougher teams. When conference comes around, you are playing tough teams again and you already know what you need to do. It helps us for conference play."
Utah State Freshman Guard Sam Merrill
"It's usually our defense that has kept us going, but it just wasn't our day defensively. We did a pretty good job of knowing what they were going to do on offense, but our biggest issue was staying in front of them off the dribble. We gave up quite a few rhythm 3's in the second half and we just can't do that against a team that shoots the ball so well."
Weber State Head Coach Randy Rahe
"I thought our team played really tough and wore them (Utah State) down. Our guys didn't flinch when Utah State went up by two after we had been leading the whole way. We got some big stops at the end of the game and I'm really proud of our kids. We could've folded there at the end when Utah State made a push, but our guys played tough."
