MOSCOW, Idaho - Dandrick Jones scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Idaho Vandals to a 69-62 Big West Conference win against Utah State in the league opener for both teams at Memorial Gym Thursday night.
The Vandals improved to 2-8 on the season with the win, while Utah State fell to 7-3 with the loss. The loss for Utah State marked the first time since the 1998-99 season that it did not win its league opener.
Utah State was led by Spencer Nelson who recorded his third straight double-double and fifth of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Jaycee Carroll also scored 17 points, 14 of which came in the second-half. Nate Harris added 12 points for USU.
Utah State scored the first nine points of the game and lead 18-8 with 13:35 remaining in the half before Idaho went on a 15-4 run over the next five-plus minutes to take its first lead at 23-22. Idaho extended its lead to four at 29-25 and went into the half up one, 35-34.
Utah State shot 58.3 percent in the first-half as compared to just 41.0 percent for Idaho, but the Vandals had 12 offensive rebounds in the opening stanza.
Utah State reclaimed the lead early in the second-half and lead 41-39 with 18:05 remaining before Idaho scored five straight points to gain a 44-41 advantage. After USU tied the game at 44, Idaho scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 52-46 lead. The Aggies cut the lead to one on three separate occasions and trailed 61-60 with 5:56 remaining, but scored just two points the remainder of the game to lose by seven.
For the game, Utah State shot 52.3 percent from the field and held Idaho to 44.1 percent, but the Vandals had 24 more shots in the game due to 19 offensive rebounds. Overall, Idaho out-rebounded the Aggies 37-26.
Utah State had won 32 straight games when out-shooting its opponents.
Utah State will return to action on Wed., Dec. 29 when it faces South Carolina State at 8 p.m. in the first round of the Gossner Foods Holiday Classic.
