LOGAN, Utah – Utah State freshman guard Koby McEwen has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, January 8, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
McEwen (Toronto, Canada) led Utah State in scoring this past week and tied a freshman scoring record as the Aggies posted a pair of wins at home over New Mexico (79-75) and UNLV (79-63). Against the Lobos, McEwen scored 18 points, including 16 in the second half, and knocked down a career-high 12 free throws on a career-high 16 attempts. Additionally, McEwen recorded five rebounds, three assists and one steal, while shooting 33.3 percent (2-of-6) from the floor, 50.0 percent (2-of-4) from behind the 3-point line and 75.0 percent (12-of-16) at the free throw line. Against UNLV, McEwen tied Jaycee Carroll’s freshman record of 28 points, including 24 in the second half, and added career highs with seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks. McEwen shot 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the floor, 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from behind the 3-point line and 60.0 percent (3-of-5) at the free throw line. McEwen’s five 3-point buckets also tied a career high. For the week, McEwen averaged 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.0 blocks and 0.5 steals per game, all while shooting 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the floor, 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from behind the 3-point line and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) at the free throw line.
Utah State men's basketball will return to the court this week for a two-game road trip, beginning at Wyoming on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m. The road swing will wrap up at San Diego State on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 8 p.m. (MT). WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Sophomore guard Rachel Brewster (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) averaged 9.5 points and 8.5 rebounds last week as Utah State lost a pair of Mountain West road games at New Mexico (78-67) and at UNLV (55-53) in overtime. Against the Lobos, Brewster scored seven points, while adding three rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Against the Lady Rebels, she recorded her first-career double-double as she led the Aggies with 13 points and a career-best 12 rebounds, to go along with four assists and one steal. Along with averaging 9.5 points and 8.5 rebounds last week, Brewster also added seven assists, two steals and one block, while shooting 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from the field, 33.3 percent (2-of-6) from the 3-point line and 50.0 percent (1-of-2) from the free throw line.
GYMNASTICS – Sophomore Madison Ward (Rexburg, Idaho) was the lone Aggie to capture an event title as she won the floor with a 9.825 last weekend at the Arizona tri-meet. Utah State finished second in the meet with a team score of 191.600.
